Credo III

The third setting of the Nicene creed (there are six in the standard Roman chant books) is a sine qua non for any liturgical choir. For that matter, every Catholic should know Credo III. It is not the oldest setting (that's Credo I), nor the most beautiful (that's Credo IV, for my money), but it is overwhelmingly the most commonly used version of the Creed. Some parishes use no other setting; it is frequently used at Papal Masses. You need this in your toolkit.

So what does it sound like? Here are two recordings: the first is a solo performance by Giovanni Vianini, the indefatigable Milanese cantor; the second helpfully flashes up the Latin text so you can sing along.

Thanks to Frances for providing these links.

One of these days I must work out how to embed videos in a post ...
